Listen, I'm not going to tell you to make your life sadder by not eating curly fries. But I think I can convince you to make your curly fries healthier by baking them at home. This recipe may take 55 minutes, but 15 is soaking potatoes in water and 30 is baking ... so it's actually quite fast and simple. This recipe make a side-dish for two people. You'll need a spiralizer.
Ingredients
One large russet potato
Olive oil
Equal parts garlic salt, paprika and chili powder - OR - Old Bay Seasoning - OR - steak seasoning
Preparation
- Preheat oven to 450.
- Peel the potato and cut the ends off to make a flat surface. Run it through the spiralizer to make curls.
- Soak the potatoes in a bowl of cold water for 15 minutes.
- Drain the potatoes on a paper towel. Pat dry.
- Toss in a bowl with a dash of olive oil until well-coated. Sprinkle with seasoning and mix to coat evenly.
Cook & Serve
Place potatoes in a single layer, on a parchment-paper-lined baking sheet. Bake for 15 minutes, then flip and redistribute in a single layer. Bake 10-15 more minutes until golden brown and as crispy as you'd like. Serve on a plate with whatever you'd like - hamburger, fish sticks, PB&J sandwich ... the fries are the stars here, so your main dish is just icing on the cake.
A Little Backstory
It's been weeks since I've posted and I feel guilty as hell. Sure, I've started a new job and I'm juggling my time with other things, but I should've seen this coming. I counsel people on communications strategy, and I almost always counsel against starting a blog -- telling them they'll mean well, but they'll always run out of time to post regularly. And here I am. One recipe a week has always been my goal, and I've stuck to that until recently. This blog feeds my creativity and my soul --- and also encourages me to cook healthy. I can't fall into old habits and start eating processed food and vending machine treats. I promise to do better, you guys. As I've always said, if I can do it ... you can do it. So let's do it.
