Spicy Ginger Tea

A super-simple hot drink to soothe your throat, calm your stomach and clear your head. Or just warm your wintry self from the inside-out.

Ingredients

2 cups water

6 slices of fresh ginger root (about 1/8 inch thick)

1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

2 Tablespoons honey

One pinch of cayenne pepper

Lemon slices

Preparation

Thinly slice the ginger root -- you can peel it or leave the peel on. Slice your lemon and remove the seeds.

Cook

Fill a saucepan with 2 cups of water and add the ginger root. Heat over high heat on the stove top until boiling. Reduce the heat to low and stir in the cinnamon, honey and pepper. Mix well until dissolved. Taste before serving -- add more cayenne or honey if you wish.

Serve

Pour or ladle into a mug. Squeeze a lemon slice into the tea and toss into the mug before serving.

A Little Backstory

We're lucky to have Brian's son-in-law teach us how to make this -- a family recipe from Mexico. Brian was sick with a horrible cold the first time he drank this, and he swears it cleared his head right up. It makes sense: Cayenne clears the sinuses, ginger is a natural anti-nausea treatment, and honey coats a sore throat. So the ingredients make this a perfect remedy for what ails you. Even if what's bringing you down is a long, sucky, bone-chilling winter.
