Ye Olde Winter Mulled Wine

Following my Scandinavian roots, I've put together a hot drink based on mulled wine recipes from the old country.

Ingredients:

2 1/2 cups sweet red wine (I used a tawny port)

3/4 cup apple brandy

2 star anise

1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon allspice

1/8 cup honey

Peels from a fresh lemon or orange

Preparation:

In a medium saucepan, combine all ingredients, including two 2-3 inch peels of the citrus fruit.

Cook & Serve:

Over medium-high heat, stir until all spices and honey are mixed in. Bring to boil, then reduce to low heat and simmer for an hour before serving hot. Strain out the citrus peel and star anise. Garnish the serving mugs with fresh citrus peel.

You can also make this in a slowcooker to keep it warm! This recipe makes 2-3 mugs of mulled wine. Easy to double, triple, or quadruple for a party.

A Little Backstory:

You'll find a few recipes out here to use up that damn 1.5 Liter bottle of port I bought for Thanksgiving. This is a GREAT recipe to make a too-sweet wine drinkable. (And, hallelujah, that's the end of the port!)
